Visit Likoma Island
Likoma Island lies in the north-eastern part of Lake Malawi. Although it is surrounded by Mozambican waters, the island belongs to Malawi. It is known for its clear water, sandy beaches, and varied cichlid species, including some found only around Likoma.
The island covers about 17 square kilometres, and Likoma Town is its main settlement. It is also home to St. Peter’s Cathedral, one of the largest cathedrals in Central Africa.

Malipenga dance competitions are often held at weekends. Local groups perform to traditional music, with male dancers wearing military-style costumes influenced by the colonial period. These events offer visitors a chance to see an important part of local culture.
St. Peter’s Cathedral
St. Peter’s Cathedral is one of Likoma Island’s main landmarks. Its size is often compared with Winchester Cathedral in England, which ranks among Europe’s largest cathedrals. The building also features a clock tower, stained-glass windows and carved soapstone choir stalls.

- Dry Season (May to October): Daytime temperatures usually range from 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F), while evenings are cooler at around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F).
- Wet Season (November to April): Daytime temperatures generally range from 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F), with night-time temperatures between 20°C and 24°C (68°F to 75°F).
Ideal Visiting Period: June to September is a suitable time to visit Likoma Island, with drier conditions for diving, snorkelling, and sightseeing.

- Kaya Mawa: Kaya Mawa is located on Likoma Island in Lake Malawi. The lodge offers a relaxed stay, friendly local service, and modern facilities.
- Ulisa Bay Lodge: Ulisa Bay Lodge is situated on the western side of Likoma Island, offering sunset views and reasonably priced accommodation. Guests can choose from standard or deluxe chalets, each with a spacious veranda overlooking the lake. A campsite is also available beside the lake, set among mango trees.
- Ndomo House: It's a private four-bedroom property on Likoma Island, about a one-hour flight from Lilongwe. It provides accommodation for families and friends.
How to reach Likoma Island
Likoma Island can be reached by air or ferry. Flights operate to Likoma Airport from Lilongwe and other cities in Malawi, while the MV Ilala ferry serves mainland ports, including Nkhata Bay.
